Would I know if my son/daughter met with the School Counselor?

We try to meet with all the students on our teams throughout the year. We do not contact parents every time we meet with a student. We would contact parents if we had any questions or concerns.  Counseling meetings with students are confidential, and we may only share information if we feel your student's or another person’s safety may be jeopardized.  School Counselors follow the American School Counselors Association guidelines for confidentiality http://www.schoolcounselor.org/asca/media/asca/PositionStatements/PS_Confidentiality.pdf .

What are some important things to let my child’s counselor know?

  • Changes in the home (separation/divorce, death in family, family illness, financial stressors, custody arrangements, upcoming move)
  • Academic concerns
  • Emotional/social/behavioral/health concerns
  • Problems or questions around peer relationships
  • If a student will be out for an extended period because of illness or vacation
