How TCMS Supports Safe Digital Use

How TCMS Supports Safe Technology Use

At Twelve Corners Middle School, technology is an important part of learning—but it comes with shared expectations and safeguards. Our goal is to support students in using technology safely, responsibly, and in ways that reflect our community values, while also providing clear systems for support when concerns arise.

This page explains what we expect, how we monitor, and how we respond in a transparent and developmentally appropriate way.

Acceptable Use Policy (AUP): What It Means in Plain Language

The TCMS Acceptable Use Policy outlines how school‑issued devices and networks are expected to be used.

In simple terms, this means students are expected to:

  • Use school technology for learning and school‑appropriate purposes

  • Communicate online in ways that show respect, kindness, and responsibility

  • Protect their own privacy and the privacy of others

  • Follow adult guidance when using digital tools at school

The AUP is not meant to be a “gotcha” document. Instead, it provides clear expectations so students understand what responsible technology use looks like—and so families and staff are aligned in supporting those expectations.

What Linewize Does — and Doesn’t Do (Admin. tool)

Linewize is a monitoring and filtering tool used on school‑issued devices while students are on the school network.

What Linewize Does

  • Flags concerning searches or online behavior and sends them to the district/ building administration for review

  • Supports staff in identifying potential safety concerns early

  • Acts as a teaching tool, prompting conversations about digital choices

What Linewize Does NOT Do

  • It does not read personal messages like a person would

  • It does not replace adult supervision or conversations

  • It is not used to watch students constantly or punitively

  • It does not monitor personal devices outside of school systems

Linewize supports proactive learning and safety, not surveillance. It helps adults notice patterns that may signal a student needs guidance or support.

What Classwize Is (Staff Tool)

Classwize is a classroom management tool used by teachers during instructional time.

It allows staff to:

  • View student screens during class

  • Help students stay focused on learning tasks

  • Redirect off‑task behavior in real time

  • Support responsible device use during lessons

Classwize helps create a focused, supportive learning environment and allows teachers to address issues early—often before they become bigger concerns.

How Concerns Are Flagged and Followed Up

Concerns related to technology use may come to our attention in several ways:

  • A staff member notices something during class

  • A concern is flagged through Linewize

  • A student or caregiver reports a concern

  • A peer shares information with a trusted adult

What Happens Next

  • Concerns are reviewed by the appropriate school staff

  • Context is carefully considered (age, intent, impact)

  • When needed, students are supported through:

    • Restorative conversations

    • Counseling support

    • Skill‑building lessons

  • Families are contacted when appropriate

Our response focuses on learning, accountability, and support, not assumptions or immediate punishment. When possible, we treat concerns as opportunities to help students grow in their digital decision‑making.

Our Commitment

TCMS uses technology tools as supports—not substitutes—for relationships.
Safe technology use is built through:

  • Clear expectations

  • Ongoing teaching

  • Strong partnerships with families

  • Thoughtful, restorative responses when challenges arise

If you ever have questions or concerns about technology use, we encourage you to reach out to a teacher, counselor, or administrator. Working together helps keep our digital spaces safe, respectful, and supportive for all students.
